Rugby’s crown jewel is coming to America.
The Guardian is reporting that World Rugby expects to award both the 2031 and 2033 World Cups to the USA. The official decision will be made in mid-May. However, barring any significant changes, the bid is expected to be successful.
The bid seemed headed for success after a meeting between the American bid team and World Rugby CEO Adam Gilpin in Denver last week.
A nine year runway would allow both the MLR and USA Rugby to continue developing. The eleven year runway to the women’s event is more intriguing. With no clear preferred candidate for the 2029 Cup, pushing a USA hosting bid back four years is intriguing. There’s something else there. More on that to come.
